Dropshipper of DVDs and CDs. |
It’s not really surprising, these are among the most popular items that are purchased online, so it kind of makes sense to go where the money is, or does it?
Well, it does if you like competition. Just think about all of the different places that you can buy a DVD from, not just online but off line as well. Amazon, eBay, Play.com, HMV, Tesco.com, not to mention all of the stores on your high street. In fact, amongst the cheapest places to buy DVD’s from these days is the large Super Markets. Why is this? Put simply, they have the purchasing power. In some cases, you can buy DVD’s cheaper from the supermarket than you can from the distributors.
So how can you compete selling DVD’s?
It is possible to compete, you just need to think about your business a little and how you’re going to put your DVD’s in front of the buying public. One of the most popular places to buy DVD’s is eBay, understandably this is probably the most competitive selling environments, however one person can not sell all of the time, so you will have your chances to make sales and build your customer list.
Regarding the types of DVD’s to sell, our advice is not to try and sell the latest release DVD’s or CD’s. This market is ultra competitive and one that you’ll be destined to lose in the long run, the reason for this is because the larger companies simply buy a greater volume of units and will have negotiated larger discounts, they also have the luxury of being able to open warehouses in Jersey to take advantage of VAT breaks. So in a lot of cases, you’re not just competing on price but also with companies not paying VAT, tough market.
We suggest that you research companies that sell back catalogue products. This will give you regular access to stock, it will also provide you with the number one opportunity when selling entertainment products like this, deleted stock. Many sellers, do not consider deleted titles as opportunities, we suggest that this will give you the greatest opportunity to make profit.
An example, a particular title on a suppliers back catalogue was available for around £1.80 and regularly sold for £5 or more. This is good profit, however when it was announced this particular title was to be deleted, there was a fantastic opportunity to purchase as much stock of that title as possible and become the only source of this product. Once that happens, you will be able to control the price. So whilst the title was selling at £5 when lots of stock and other sellers had access to that title, the price began to increase when stock became limited. When stock becomes limited, the best place to sell is Amazon Marketplace.
It comes down to the relationship you have with your suppliers and the research you do. Don’t expect to have this knowledge overnight. Like all businesses you need to work hard at it, research and test your market. Once you can begin to identify niche areas like this, you will start to make good money on a consistent basis. |
